How Edumentors Is Building an AI Tutor That Actually Teaches

Edumentors is a UK-based EdTech company working on one of education’s oldest problems: great teaching works, but it does not scale.

Founded in 2022, the company began by connecting school students with tutors from leading UK universities, including Oxford, Cambridge and UCL. Since then, it has supported thousands of students across more than 50 countries.

That human tutoring business is now the foundation for something bigger. Edumentors is building AI products designed to bring the quality and personal attention of one-to-one tutoring to far more students than human tutors alone could ever reach. Its flagship product is Emma, an interactive AI tutor.

Alongside Emma sits MarkMyGCSE, a platform that marks GCSE past papers with AI and tells students exactly where they need to improve.

The Problem Edumentors Is Solving

The best tutors are scarce, their time is limited, and high-quality personalised tutoring is expensive. So access to excellent individualised education still depends heavily on geography and family income.

At the same time, students are not short of content. Videos, textbooks, question banks and online courses are everywhere. What students lack is personalisation: someone who knows what they understand, spots what they do not, explains a concept differently when needed, challenges them at the right level and gives feedback on the spot.

Edumentors does not believe the future of AI in education is a chatbot sitting next to a textbook. A great tutor actively teaches. They talk to the student, write things down, draw diagrams, ask questions, notice mistakes and keep adjusting the lesson as it unfolds. That is the experience the team set out to recreate.

Meet Emma, the AI Tutor

Emma is built around live, interactive teaching. Students speak with Emma naturally in real time, while Emma uses an interactive whiteboard, displays problems and visual explanations, asks questions, identifies gaps in understanding and adapts the lesson as the student learns.

Several AI systems work together behind the scenes, so a session feels much closer to learning with an excellent human tutor than to chatting with a bot.

The team’s second product, MarkMyGCSE, attacks a different bottleneck: feedback. Students can complete GCSE past papers whenever they like, but traditionally they either wait for a teacher or tutor to mark every answer, or check their work against a mark scheme by hand. MarkMyGCSE does the marking with AI and turns it into immediate, detailed and actionable feedback.

The People Behind Edumentors

Edumentors was founded by Tornike Asatiani, a Georgian entrepreneur and London Business School MBA graduate. Before Edumentors, he built and managed businesses in other industries.

Education presented a problem he could not ignore: some students have access to outstanding teachers, tutors and role models, while millions of equally capable students do not. Edumentors was built to narrow that gap.

The technology team is led by CTO Shota Gvinepadze, who first joined Edumentors as an AI expert before taking over leadership of the technology function in 2026.

Today the company is an international team across the UK, Georgia and India, bringing together experience in education, software engineering, AI, product development and customer experience. Years of watching real tutoring sessions shape how Emma teaches: what makes a tutor effective, where students struggle, and what families actually expect from personalised education.

How the Idea Took Shape

The original idea was simple. The right tutor changes much more than a student’s grade. When students learn from exceptional young people who have recently succeeded in the same academic system, they gain a role model, and getting into Oxford or Cambridge starts to feel achievable rather than distant.

So Edumentors built its platform around tutors from leading universities, learned directly from thousands of tutoring sessions, and gradually expanded internationally.

As AI capabilities accelerated, the team began asking a bigger question: could the most valuable elements of an excellent one-to-one tutor be recreated and made available to millions of students?

Early AI education products convinced them the opportunity was enormous, but also that handing students a general-purpose chatbot was not enough. Rather than rely on one model and a chat window, Emma brings together multiple AI components, live voice interaction, visual tools, an interactive whiteboard and structured educational content.

For Edumentors, AI is not a departure from the original mission. It is the technology that could let them fulfil that mission at a scale human tutoring alone could never reach.

Growth So Far

Since launching in 2022, Edumentors has grown from a UK-focused tutoring platform into an international education company, with students learning in more than 50 countries. The company has raised approximately $2 million in external investment to support its growth and product development.

Emma has progressed from concept to a working product and is being developed and tested as its capabilities expand. The initial focus is mathematics, where conversation, equations, diagrams, graphs and step-by-step reasoning make a truly interactive interface especially important.

MarkMyGCSE is already in students’ hands, bringing AI into exam practice and feedback. The next stage of growth is about taking everything the team has learned from delivering human tutoring and translating it into AI products that can serve students at a fundamentally different scale.

What Comes Next

The biggest priority is the continued development and rollout of Emma: starting with mathematics, then expanding into more subjects and age groups, while improving how well Emma understands individual students, remembers their learning journey, spots knowledge gaps and adapts how material is taught.

The longer-term goal is not an AI that simply answers educational questions. It is a personal tutor that knows every student: what they have learned, what they struggle with, how quickly they progress and which explanations work best for them.

“Schools are failing and we are asleep at the wheel. AI has already disrupted the studying process and technology is falling behind in the education sector. Luckily, AI now gives us the opportunity to take the qualities that make great teachers and make them accessible to millions of students. Edumentors’ goal is to build a live, interactive and engaging AI tutor that knows how to teach.”

Edumentors also sees significant opportunities beyond families. As the technology matures, the plan is to work with schools and other educational institutions, where AI tutors can complement teachers by giving individual students personalised support that would otherwise be impossible at classroom scale.

Human tutoring will remain an important part of the company. The broader vision is an education ecosystem in which human tutors and AI complement each other, and where the quality of education a student receives depends less on their postcode, school or family income.
